Role Overview

The Bartender is responsible for providing exceptional beverage service in alignment with internal standard operating procedures (SOPs). This includes preparing drinks, upselling beverages, ensuring the bar is well-stocked, and engaging with guests to provide excellent service. The bartender will also manage their section of the bar, maintain cleanliness, and ensure the safe handling of equipment and inventory.

Key Responsibilities

Prepared Work Area

  • Prepare mise-en-place and conduct checks to ensure everything is in place for smooth service.

  • Identify and resolve any issues with the bar display, surrounding areas, and equipment.

  • Stock the bar appropriately for service, ensuring all necessary items are readily available.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in your section of the bar to meet hygiene standards.

  • Conduct regular checks on bar supplies to ensure they are well-stocked and ready for the shift.

Service Execution

  • Stay updated with the latest food and beverage trends to ensure you can deliver up-to-date and excellent service.

  • Accurately take guest orders and input them into the system in a timely manner.

  • Explain the beverage menu to guests, providing recommendations based on their preferences.

  • Mix and serve drinks in line with guest orders and outlet standards.

  • Provide timely service to ensure guests enjoy their experience without unnecessary delays.

  • Clear glasses and used items after guests have finished their drinks to maintain a tidy and welcoming environment.

  • Conduct cash-ups at the end of service and ensure that all transactions are processed correctly.

  • Complete beverage stock sheets at the end of each shift to track inventory and ensure proper stock levels.

  • Look for opportunities to upsell on promotional beverages and special offers, maximizing sales potential.

Bar Standards

  • Adhere to all Food and Beverage standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent service quality.

  • Maintain awareness of health, safety, hygiene, and environmental regulations in the workplace.

  • Use and store operating equipment according to safety regulations to prevent accidents.

  • Participate in stock takes and perform daily stock counts of bar smalls (e.g., liquor, garnishes).

  • Report any discrepancies, breakages, or damages to equipment to ensure timely resolution and avoid service disruptions.

Customer Engagement

  • Greet guests warmly upon arrival and departure, ensuring they feel welcomed and respected at all times.

  • Provide guests with professional service by addressing their needs and offering tailored recommendations.

  • Identify repeat customers and note their preferences to ensure a personalized experience.

  • Educate customers about the business unit’s facilities, products, reward programs, and current promotions.

  • Handle customer complaints, requests, and suggestions efficiently and courteously, escalating when necessary to management.

Requirements

Education

  • Grade 12 preferred, or Grade 10 with relevant experience.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a bartender in a similar environment.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Beverage and Cocktail Product Knowledge: Ability to mix and serve a wide variety of beverages and cocktails to high standards.

  • Barrister Skills: Proficiency in preparing and serving coffee-based drinks is an advantage.

  • Cashiering Services: Understanding of basic cashiering procedures, including handling payments and completing transactions.

  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal communication to engage with guests and provide excellent service.

  • Upselling Skills: Ability to identify opportunities to promote and upsell items from the beverage menu.

  • Basic Computer Literacy: Comfortable using point-of-sale (POS) systems and tracking inventory through basic computer software.

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to think quickly and find solutions to customer issues or operational challenges.
