Position Overview
As a Stagehand, you will be responsible for supporting underground shaft operations, equipment handling, construction activities, and ensuring legal compliance related to explosive handling and crew safety. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in underground mining and shaft equipping projects, with the capacity to assume supervisory duties when required.
You will report directly to the Lead Shaftman II, and be expected to lead the crew during specific operational tasks, ensuring that safety, productivity, and quality standards are consistently met. Your ability to communicate clearly and manage high-pressure underground conditions will be key to your success in this role.
Key Responsibilities

Assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Sinker in charge, within legal and safety boundaries.

Legally sign off on workplace declarations and oversee the safe handling and use of explosives.

Conduct safe and efficient shaft construction activities including concrete lining, stage operation, and services installation.

Coordinate effective and timely bank activities, including shaft signaling, slinging operations, and safe transport of people and materials.

Perform and document stage inspections, equipment checks, and ensure compliance with M&RC and client safety standards.

Participate in proactive risk identification and mitigation, aligned with DMR, SHEQ, and company safety protocols.

Supervise team members to ensure adherence to standards, deadlines, and operational excellence.

Maintain effective communication with shaft teams and supervisors to facilitate smooth operational workflows.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills
Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered for the role:

Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 equivalent.

Valid Blasting Certificate for Scheduled Mines.

Trade_B Certificate (compulsory for this role).

Onsetter Certificate and Basic Rigging Certificate (advantageous).

Working at Heights, Excavator, Batch Plant, and Drill Rig Operation Certificates (preferred).

Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.

Physically and medically fit for underground mining work.

Proven ability to supervise a team and assume legal accountability in a mining context.

Willingness to complete internal MRTA training as per the company’s skills matrix.
Experience Requirements

Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Stagehand in underground mining environments.

Hands-on involvement in shaft sinking, shaft construction, and equipping projects.

Familiarity with shaft concrete lining, wetcrete applications, civil works, and underground logistics.

Experience in leading teams and assuming legal responsibilities (highly advantageous).

Exposure to working with heavy mining equipment, including batch plants and drill rigs.
