Job Overview
The Artisan Diesel Mechanic will report directly to the Foreman Engineering and play a critical role in the construction, maintenance, and repair of underground diesel-powered equipment and systems. You will ensure all engineering installations and mobile equipment perform at peak efficiency to support daily production targets and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled maintenance, fault finding, and diagnostics on diesel engines, underground utility vehicles (TMM), and auxiliary equipment.

  • Conduct engineering installations according to agreed specifications, safety protocols, and company standards.

  • Carry out timely repairs and ensure a high mean time between failures (MTBF).

  • Minimize downtime and support cost containment by adhering to best practices in mechanical repair and maintenance.

  • Adhere to all SHEQ, M&RC, and client safety standards, ensuring compliance at all times.

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, part usage, and equipment performance.

  • Build positive working relationships with engineering teams, operators, and stakeholders to enable smooth equipment handovers.

  • Lead by example in team motivation, discipline, and adherence to MRC values and leadership principles.

  • Identify and communicate equipment faults proactively to prevent safety hazards or extended downtime.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills Required
To be eligible for the position, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 equivalent.

  • Section 26 Trade Certificate in Diesel Mechanics from a recognized institution such as MERSETA, MQA, Olifantsfontein (pre-1994), ESTC, or GFA.

  • Completion of a formal Apprenticeship Contract recognized by the Department of Manpower.

  • A valid Code EB (08) Driver’s License.

  • Valid First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain one during onboarding).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

  • Medically fit to work underground (HTS and RFA clearance required).

  • Clean criminal record.

Required Work Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the mining industry, including both underground and surface operations.

  • At least 5 years of trade experience as a Diesel Mechanic, with a proven ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines and heavy-duty mining machinery.

  • Experience with Trackless Mobile Machinery (TMM) is preferred and will be an advantage.
