Job Overview

Absa Bank is looking for a Junior Bank Teller (C&B) to join its team in Hartswater. This role involves handling customer transactions, cash management, and risk control while providing excellent customer service. Key Responsibilities

1. Cash & Transaction Processing

  • Process all bank teller transactions accurately and efficiently.

  • Balance, control, and manage cash floats throughout the day, ensuring compliance with prescribed limits.

  • Dispense and receive physical cash, cheques, travellers’ cheques, drafts, and other financial instruments.

  • Verify customer identification and account details to ensure secure transactions.

  • Be vigilant for fraudulent or suspicious activities and report concerns to the branch manager.

  • Follow strict policies regarding cheques, notes, ID verification, and cash handling.

  • Refer any transactions exceeding teller limits to a mandated official or line manager for approval.

  • Use the banking system to capture and process all transactions efficiently.

  • Carefully count cash received or dispensed to prevent discrepancies.

  • Reconcile daily cash balances and prepare reports for audit and management.

  • Ensure all journals are processed correctly, recovering charges for manual transactions.

  • Comply with SARB (South African Reserve Bank) minimum cash handling requirements.

2. Customer Service & Engagement

  • Advise customers on banking processes to ensure smooth transactions.

  • Resolve customer inquiries promptly and escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate department.

  • Provide customers with regular feedback regarding their queries and transaction statuses.

  • Educate customers about banking security protocols, ID requirements, and service offerings.

  • Assist customers in correctly completing transaction documentation, such as deposit and withdrawal slips.

  • Deliver professional, friendly, and efficient customer service at all times.

  • Maintain a professional image and ensure your personal appearance aligns with Absa’s corporate standards.

  • Ensure your workstation is neat, tidy, and well-equipped before the branch opens.

  • Keep updated on pricing documents related to teller transactions to offer customers the best solutions.

  • Guide and assist customers in using digital and self-service banking channels.

  • Encourage customers to use alternative banking methods such as online and mobile banking.

  • Distribute promotional material and educate customers about Absa’s banking products.

3. Identifying Sales Leads & Cross-Selling

  • Identify and action sales leads from teller prompts.

  • Introduce customers to Absa’s products and services.

  • Capture all leads on the Sales Management Database (SMD) and follow up with sales consultants.

  • Assist in achieving branch sales targets by directing customers to the appropriate sales teams.

  • Market bank products by providing brochures and information on relevant banking solutions.

4. Compliance & Risk Management

  • Follow all security procedures when opening and closing the branch safe.

  • Conduct cash counts and visual checks as per management requests.

  • Maintain proper transaction records for compliance and control purposes.

  • Verify all transaction information for accuracy and completeness before processing.

  • Adhere to cash management procedures and prescribed limits.

  • Stay updated on banking regulations, risk management policies, and fraud prevention.

  • Report any suspicious transactions in line with the Money Laundering Control Framework.

  • Maintain and complete teller and key registers accurately.

  • Ensure safety and security measures are followed at all times.

  • Keep all workstations, cubicles, and teller drawers locked when unattended.

  • Follow off-line procedures and comply with all regulatory requirements.

  • Manage security items such as cash, teller stamps, safe keys, and FBSS cards in line with policy.

  • Regularly update your knowledge on cheques, fraud detection, and foreign exchange procedures.

  • Report and troubleshoot any issues with banking equipment, note counters, and TCR machines.

  • Ensure compliance with end-of-day reconciliation procedures (ABSA 3368).

  • Follow branch paper mandates when processing transactions within set limits.


Minimum Requirements

📌 Education & Qualification:

  • A Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) in Business, Commerce, or Management Studies(Required).

📌 Experience & Skills:

  • Previous cash-handling and customer service experience (preferably in banking or retail).

  • Strong numerical ability to count cash accurately and reconcile daily transactions.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with customers and colleagues.

  • Knowledge of banking policies and procedures, including compliance, fraud prevention, and customer service protocols.

  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced banking environment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills to address customer inquiries and service issues.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and banking software.
