Job Purpose
RCL Foods is looking for a Code 10 Driver Salesman to join our Baking Business Unit. Based in Empangeni, the successful candidate will be responsible for driving and handling the transportation and sales of bread and confectionery. The role includes calling on customers (traders and retail stores), taking orders, and delivering products – often for cash and acquiring new customers. This position will report to the Distribution Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Vehicle and Dress Duties

Maintain a clean vehicle in line with high hygiene standards at all times.

Wear prescribed PPE clothing and ensure proper safety equipment is used.

Ensure that the driving compartment is clean and safe according to Occupational Health and Safety standards.

Conduct vehicle checks according to the checklist specified by the company, reporting any faults.

Immediately report any damage, theft, or accidents to the Logistics Manager.
Stock and Loading

Verify that the stock loaded matches customer orders and report discrepancies to the Route Controller.

Ensure that the vehicle is safely loaded and stock quality is inspected before transport.

Assist with loading as required and ensure that customers are aware of any substandard stock before delivery.
Sales and Customer Interaction

Engage with customers in a friendly, respectful manner, building long-term relationships.

Actively seek opportunities to increase sales to current customers and acquire new customers.

Report potential customer losses to supervisors and attempt to win back lost customers.

Promote sales and implement promotions at customer sites as required.

Ensure customer service levels are maintained and follow up on delivery issues.
Delivery Responsibilities
-
Ensure deliveries are made according to customer orders and stock levels are managed appropriately.

If sales exceed the stock available, ensure that replenishment arrangements are made with the sales department.

Recover crates delivered and return them to Sunshine Bakery premises promptly.

Transport goods, materials, or personnel to/from specific locations when necessary.
Transactional Duties

Secure cash and documentation, ensuring that all transactional paperwork is handled accurately.

Complete cash-ups in the presence of the supervisor, and ensure that all documentation aligns with the goods sold and cash received.

Deposit cash in the vehicle safe immediately after receiving it and investigate any shortages within 24 hours.
Competitor Analysis

Collect competitor sales and product information and identify new market opportunities.
General Duties
-
Drivers may be required to assist in other aspects of the business, including acting as a van assistant or loader when needed.

Adhere to health and safety standards, complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Report any health issues that could affect the ability to drive safely.
Minimum Requirements
Education
-
Grade 12 (Matric).
-
Valid Driver’s License and PDP.
Experience
-
At least 2 years of driving experience in FMCG, with a strong track record of sales and customer interactions.
-
Experience in delivering and selling FMCG products for cash is highly advantageous.
Skills
-
Good numeracy skills.
-
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
General Requirements
-
Must maintain a valid Driver’s License and PDP.
-
Willing to work weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required.

Expected to be on standby and assist in the event of driver absenteeism.
