Job Purpose
RCL Foods is looking for a Code 10 Driver Salesman to join their Baking Business Unit in Durban. The role involves the transportation and sales of bread and confectionery, including calling on customers, taking orders, and delivering goods, often for cash and new customer acquisition. This is a Permanent position that reports to the Distribution Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Vehicle and Dress Duties

Maintain a clean vehicle to meet high hygiene standards.

Wear and use the prescribed PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

Ensure that the driving compartment is clean and safe according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Perform regular vehicle checks, reporting and logging any faults, and ensure repairs are made promptly.

Follow road safety rules and report any accidents, theft, or damage to the Logistics Manager.
Stock and Loading

Verify that the stock loaded matches customer orders.

Report any discrepancies to the Route Controller.

Ensure proper loading of stock and that the vehicle is safely loaded to maintain road safety.

Inspect stock quality and notify customers if substandard goods are being delivered.

Assist with loading as needed.
Van Assistants
-
Take responsibility for and supervise the van assistant.
-
Ensure the van assistant adheres to company standards and maintains a professional attitude with customers.

Report performance issues with the van assistant to the Route Controller.
Sales and Customer Interaction

Be friendly, respectful, and helpful toward customers.

Increase daily sales by promoting additional sales to current customers and seeking new customers.

Report potential or actual customer losses and attempt to win back lost customers.

Maintain customer relationships and ensure they are satisfied with service.
Code 10 Driver Delivery Responsibilities
-
Ensure that the stock delivered matches the customer’s order.
-
Monitor stock levels and ensure all customers on the route are supplied as per their order.
-
Coordinate replenishment of stock through alternative vehicles or by returning to the bakery if needed.

Ensure that all crates delivered are recovered and returned to Sunshine Bakery premises.

Handle breakdowns by collecting and delivering products from other locations.
Transactional Duties

Safeguard cash and paperwork, and use the vehicle safe for secure transactions.

Immediately deposit cash in the vehicle safe and stay vigilant against fraudulent activities.

Complete cash-ups with the supervisor upon returning from the route and ensure that all documents balance with the cash received.

Accurately complete transactional documentation, such as invoices, delivery notes, and vehicle logs.
Competitor Analysis

Collect competitor information regarding sales, customers, and products to identify market trends.
General Duties
-
Drivers may be asked to assist with van assistant or loading duties as needed.

Comply with health and safety standards and report any health issues that could impact driving ability.
Minimum Requirements
Education
-
Grade 12 (Matric).

Valid Driver’s License and PDP.
Experience
-
Minimum 3 years of driving experience in the FMCG sector, particularly in delivering and selling products for cash to customers.
Skills
-
Good numeracy skills.

Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
General Requirements

Maintain a valid Driver’s License and PDP.

Willingness to work weekends, public holidays, and overtime as required.

Availability to be on standby for driver absenteeism situations.
