Position Objective
The Application Support Engineer is responsible for providing technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance for enterprise applications used within SANRAL. This role ensures stability, availability, and optimal performance of applications by resolving user issues, managing incidents, and collaborating with internal teams and external partners.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Diploma in Information Technology (NQF level 6).
- Experience: Five (5) years of relevant experience.
- Certifications:
- ITIL Foundation.
Advantageous
- Technical Skills:
- SQL and Oracle DBA Fundamentals (writing queries, performance tuning, user access management).
- ITSM: Experience with Incident, Problem, and Change Management.
- Microsoft SQL Server Certification (MCSA/MCSE).
- Oracle Certified Associate.
- Additional Skills:
- Querying, troubleshooting, and performance optimization with SQL.
Technical Competencies
- Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC): Knowledge of SDLC, Agile methodologies, tools, and best practices.
- Technology Trends: Systems integration, SQL scripts, Oracle.
Key Responsibilities
Management of Systems (ITIL Methodologies)
- Provide 1st and 2nd-level support for all SANRAL applications.
- Respond to Helpdesk calls promptly and resolve issues.
- Follow incident, change, and problem management processes according to ITIL.
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring application issues.
Operational Responsibilities
- Monitor application performance, availability, and reliability.
- Resolve slow performance, integration failures, and system errors.
- Work with database administrators, network engineers, and partners to optimize application performance.
- Assist users with application-related queries, configurations, and best practices.
- Write and execute SQL queries to troubleshoot application database issues.
- Troubleshoot Oracle tablespaces, schemas, and user roles.
- Assist with database connectivity issues, user access, and data integrity.
- Support disaster recovery (DR) and backup plans for business-critical applications.
Reporting and Improvements
- Generate application health reports (uptime, incident resolution times, performance).
- Recommend process improvements for system reliability and user experience.
- Document known issues, solutions, and troubleshooting steps in a knowledge base.
