The Road Accident Fund’s Mission:
The RAF’s mission is to provide appropriate cover to all road users within South Africa’s borders, rehabilitate and compensate persons injured as a result of motor vehicle accidents in a timely and caring manner, and promote safe road usage.

Purpose of the Job:
The RAF Attorney: High Court is responsible for managing all High Court matters within the Fund, offering litigation services, and performing a range of tax-related services, including tax bill compliance, in accordance with South African laws and regulations.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Policy Review and Implementation:

    • Contribute to developing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and processes.
    • Stay updated with effective policy execution strategies.
  • Preparation and Research on Related Litigation Matters:

    • Conduct research for trial preparation.
    • Consult with client departments, representatives, and witnesses for case documentation.
    • Draft pleadings to justify the case position.
  • Mediation Process:

    • Take required steps in the mediation process per court rule amendments.
    • Complete mediation with joint minutes within 5 days of conclusion.
  • Represent the RAF in Third-Party Claims Litigation:

    • Attend court appearances for third-party litigation matters.
    • Manage file administration and ensure compliance with trial dates.
    • Handle appearances at courts, tribunals, and mediation hearings.
  • Settle Non-Litigious Matters Before Trial:

    • Perform early file assessments and expert consultations.
    • Recommend settlements and handle pre-trial consultations.
  • Provision of Legal Advice to RAF:

    • Provide well-researched legal advice on various matters impacting the organization.
    • Prepare legal opinions and conduct legal research.
  • Taxation Services:

    • Deliver a full range of tax services, including tax bill compliance.
    • Build relationships and offer expertise in tax services and income tax returns.
  • Reporting:

    • Prepare and submit regulatory reports to update or inform management decisions.
    • Develop reports and guide the process through alignment with RAF’s strategy.
  • Stakeholder Management:

    • Manage communication with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Represent RAF in external activities and events.
  • People Management:

    • Ensure sourcing, development, and retention of a high-performance team.
    • Implement human capital processes and manage performance.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Law or equivalent.
    • Postgraduate qualification in Law (or equivalent).
    • Admission as an Attorney of the High Court or Advocate.
    • Right of appearance in the High Court.
  • Experience:
    • 5–7 years’ legal experience post-graduation/admission.
    • At least 2 years in personal injury litigation.
