Introduction
Sasol is seeking a highly skilled Section Engineer to join the team in Secunda. In this role, you will ensure the safety, stability, and efficiency of coal mines by providing expert advice on excavation design and supporting overall mine design in compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act.

Purpose of Job
As a Section Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to validate and optimize excavation design methodologies and parameters to ensure the stability of Sasol’s mining operations. You will focus on developing and implementing safe mining practices, identifying best practices for mine and pillar design, and overseeing the long-term stability of key structures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Expert Advice: Provide expert advice on operational and long-term balance, focusing on safety, cost, and production.
  • Excavation Safety: Ensure no failures in excavation design by establishing best practices for mine and pillar design.
  • Training and Development: Create and deliver training materials to improve functional specialists’ and operating personnel’s understanding of rock mass risks and lead indicators.
  • Mine Design: Ensure long-term stability by selecting appropriate excavation and pillar design parameters, considering geological and geotechnical factors.
  • Best Practices: Identify and introduce best practices for mine design, support design, and monitoring methods to enhance operational efficiency and safety.
  • Financial Responsibility: Oversee the annual rock engineering budget, contributing to mining costs, production rates, and reserve utilization.
  • Safety and Continuous Improvement: Lead efforts to maintain best-in-class safety performance and continuously improve key safety metrics to maintain the license to operate.

Formal Education and Experience

  • Education: University Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • Certifications: Government Certificate of Competence in Engineering
  • Experience: Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in mining, with a focus on engineering and excavation design.
