Purpose

To execute environmental assessments, inspections, monitoring, and interrogation of results in line with statutory and company requirements. You will report on any deviations or opportunities and assist with reports, data analysis, and engaging authorities and service providers.

Key Responsibilities

• Track compliance with permits, licenses, and authorizations to ensure operational obligations are met.
• Log non-conformances with the environmental management program.
• Prepare and submit internal environmental monitoring and inspection reports.
• Assist in reporting all required company and legal environmental information.
• Support environmental policy, standards, and procedure development.
• Attend mine planning meetings and ensure compliance with Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).
• Develop and execute environmental awareness programs.
• Liaise with environmental regulatory authorities regarding reporting, audits, and directives.
• Work with line management to address and resolve non-conformances and implement corrective actions.
• Assist external environmental service providers with site access and logistics.
• Conduct environmental monitoring, inspections, and audits (air, water, land, biodiversity).
• Maintain environmental data in the management system.
• Facilitate investigations and implement corrective actions.
• Assist with budget control for the environmental function.

Qualifications

• MSc, Honours/BSc/BTech in Natural/Environmental Science or a related field.
• Computer literacy in MS Office.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Certificate of Fitness (or ability to obtain one).

Experience

• 3–5 years internship or similar relevant experience in environmental management.
• Knowledge of OHS Act, Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Introduction to ISO 14001 and Environmental Law.
• Understanding of local environmental legislation and reporting.
• Knowledge of environmental challenges in the coal mining industry.
• In-depth understanding of environmental management systems (ISO).
