Purpose of Job
To achieve defined performance targets in the mining section by building operator capabilities and effectively managing day-to-day mining activities, ensuring safety, compliance, and efficient resource management.
Key Accountabilities
Crew Management & Safety
- Manage crew to meet production targets and ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental protocols.
- Oversee crew competence and identify training and development needs.
- Act as a Relieving Shift Boss when necessary, managing complex mining activities.
- Ensure team members adhere to safety measures, including the use of PPE and fire patrols.
- Perform statutory inspections such as gas and ventilation tests, and complete reports.
- Conduct risk assessments, task observations, and at least one rescue drill per month with the team.
- Represent Shift Boss in Operational Excellence meetings and communicate OE report insights to other miners and artisans.
- Ensure that all team members complete their training, and address non-conformance issues.
Operations & Planning
- Conduct shift inspections and maintain housekeeping standards in the section.
- Submit accurate section reports on time and maintain detailed operator records (e.g., valid licenses).
- Ensure materials are available and request necessary resources in the section.
- Ensure that production is completed according to the plan with minimum disruptions.
- Oversee pillar extraction sections (where applicable).
- Comply with audits and checks and rectify findings as necessary.
- Apply new work methods to improve operational results.
People Development & Performance
- Support personal development targets for the shift team, providing feedback and coaching on performance.
- Address training needs and ensure all coaching is understood and applied.
- Ensure a smooth transition between shifts and maintain strong communication across teams.
- Assist with implementation of organizational change and projects within the team.
Formal Education & Experience
Formal Education
- National Senior Certificate or Full N3 (with Maths and English/Business English).
- Valid Blasting Certificate (for Fiery Mines).
- Valid First Aid Certificate.
- Valid Red Ticket (or ability to obtain one).
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Gas Testing Certificate (8 gases).
- Competent A (for underground mining).
Experience
- 2+ years of relevant underground coal mining experience.
