Purpose of Job

To oversee the engineering maintenance processes within the appointed area of responsibility, enabling mining teams to achieve production targets following the principles of Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, and Morale (QCDSM).


Key Accountabilities

  • Maintenance & Strategy Management:
    • Oversee the implementation of engineering maintenance strategies, ensuring the department meets key performance indicators (KPIs).
    • Manage and schedule maintenance tasks, ensuring the optimal replacement/repair of equipment when necessary.
    • Control maintenance costs, ensuring the budget aligns with equipment performance and downtime management.
    • Ensure equipment availability by managing downtime, shift schedules, and mean time between failure (MTTF) and mean time to repair (MTTR).
  • Operational Projects & Compliance:
    • Implement operational projects and ensure engineering compliance within the area of responsibility.
    • Develop and implement engineering Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and ensure adherence to engineering principles and legislation.
    • Participate in and adhere to engineering governance, standardization committees, and SOP/COP implementation.
  • Condition Monitoring & Maintenance Planning:
    • Oversee and execute condition monitoring programs in the designated area.
    • Conduct failure trend analysis and lead root cause elimination efforts.
    • Execute predictive maintenance recommendations and manage maintenance backlogs.
    • Coordinate with departments to achieve set targets and optimize planning within the appointed area.
  • Safety & Performance Management:
    • Ensure top-tier safety performance by maintaining a strong safety culture, focusing on Zero Harm, Zero Fatalities, and Lost Workdays (LWDCR).
    • Manage and adhere to Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) compliance rates, especially addressing major findings and outstanding actions.
  • Team Development & Recruitment:
    • Manage recruitment, training, coaching, and career development for the maintenance team.
    • Ensure the team meets the vacancy rates and turnover goals, considering absenteeism and staff engagement.
    • Track employee performance metrics such as tons per man-year, training days, and planned task observations.

Formal Education & Experience

Formal Education

  • Grade 12 or N3 with Mathematics, Physical Science, and English
  • Trade Test Certificate (Millwright/Electro Mechanic)

Experience

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in engineering and maintenance roles within mining or similar industries.
