Our Cape Road branch in Gqeberha is seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Cashier to join our team on a fixed-term contract. In this role, you will support our frontline operations, helping ensure a seamless shopping experience for customers while strictly adhering to Dis-Chem’s policies to prevent discrepancies and uphold transaction accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Interaction and Service
- Follow Dis-Chem’s service protocols to ensure a positive interaction with every customer.
- Build rapport with customers, addressing inquiries or concerns, and demonstrating a welcoming attitude.
- Report customer complaints, suggestions, and compliments to the Frontline Supervisor or store management to support continuous service improvement.
- Stay informed of current store promotions and sales to provide relevant information to customers, enhancing their shopping experience.
Transaction Management and Cash Handling
- Efficiently record purchases, process payments, and manage transactions with accuracy, using Dis-Chem’s point-of-sale system.
- Facilitate loyalty card transactions and promotions, including partnerships with programs such as Discovery Health Care, Momentum Multiply, ABSA Rewards, and others.
- Place cash securely in the drop safe as per Dis-Chem’s SOPs and use designated codes and passwords with confidentiality and care.
- Ensure that all line voids, refunds, and price adjustments are approved by the supervisor to maintain consistency and prevent unauthorized changes.
- Prevent fraud by adhering to best practices, ensuring all transactions are verified, and that only authorized items leave the store.
Inventory and Stock Management Support
- Ensure all items leaving the store are scanned and accounted for, supporting loss prevention efforts.
- Manage merchandise exchanges and returns per Dis-Chem’s policies, providing clarity and fairness in all transactions.
- Assist customers by locating products or answering questions about store merchandise, promoting a helpful and engaging shopping environment.
Security and Confidentiality
- Stay alert to any unusual activity and report it to management, ensuring the safety of customers and staff.
- Maintain control over access codes and passwords, ensuring they are used only by you and updated regularly for security.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the Cashier role at Dis-Chem Pharmacies on Cape Road, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Completion of Grade 12 / Matric.
- Minimum of six months’ experience in a cashier or till operations role, preferably within a retail setting.
- Familiarity with MS Office and other basic computer skills necessary for operating the Dis-Chem point-of-sale system.
- Sound numerical aptitude to manage cash flow, calculate change accurately, and minimize transaction errors.
- Proficiency in English, both verbal and written, to interact clearly with customers and staff.
- Basic understanding of customer service principles and a welcoming, proactive approach toward assisting customers.
- Willingness to work within a retail schedule, including weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required.
