As a Cashier, you’ll support our customers by ensuring efficient, friendly service and precise transaction handling.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service Excellence
- Deliver top-notch service, ensuring a smooth checkout process for all customers.
- Build rapport with customers to foster a welcoming shopping environment, addressing queries promptly.
- Report customer feedback, including compliments and complaints, to the Frontline Supervisor or store management, facilitating continuous service improvement.
- Remain informed about current promotions and store deals to assist customers and promote additional purchases.
Transaction Handling and Cash Management
- Operate Dis-Chem’s point-of-sale system to process sales efficiently and accurately, following standard operating procedures.
- Manage cash flow by recording all transactions with accuracy, safeguarding the integrity of the till, and reducing the risk of discrepancies.
- Process customer payments through various methods including cash, cards, vouchers, and loyalty programs with our partners (e.g., Discovery Health Care, ABSA Rewards, eBucks).
- Safely deposit cash in drop safes as per Dis-Chem’s protocol and maintain confidentiality about daily takings, discussing them only with authorized management.
- Ensure that all line voids, refunds, and price changes are authorized by a supervisor, maintaining consistency in pricing and minimizing error.
Inventory and Returns
- Assist customers with product exchanges and accept authorized returns, ensuring all items are processed correctly according to company policies.
- Help customers locate products and provide insights on merchandise, making shopping easy and enjoyable.
Security and Confidentiality
- Stay vigilant, report suspicious behavior to management, and assist in maintaining a secure store environment.
- Protect personal credentials for accessing the till system, ensuring only authorized use, and changing passwords regularly to uphold security protocols.
Minimum Requirements
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Educational Qualification: Grade 12 / Matric.
- Experience: Minimum of six months in a cashier or till operations role.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn the Dis-Chem operating system quickly.
- Numerical Ability: Strong numerical skills to accurately manage transactions and cash flow.
- Customer Service: Basic understanding of customer service principles, ensuring a friendly and helpful approach toward customers.
Competencies and Core Skills
- Cash Handling Knowledge: Ability to operate cash registers, manage cash drawers, and process sales accurately.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written command of English to communicate effectively with customers and team members.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous in transaction handling, with a focus on reducing errors.
- Professional Appearance: Presentable and adherent to Dis-Chem’s customer-first approach.
- Social Awareness: Empathy and responsiveness toward customer needs, contributing to a positive store environment.
- Time Management: Ability to handle high volumes of transactions efficiently, especially during peak hours.

- Multilingual Ability: Proficiency in a third language is advantageous for improving communication with diverse customers.
